New York Knicks superstar Jalen Brunson has become one of the most unique superstars ever. Across NBA history, there have only been two tried-and-true superstars to be the best players on their championship-winning teams who were also smaller players. Those were Stephen Curry and Isiah Thomas.

Now, Brunson has become one of the outliers because the blueprint for winning an NBA championship will remain building around a big man or at least a taller wing player. In a poetic sense, beating Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs was further proof that Brunson is an outlier.

Isiah Thomas celebrates Jalen Brunson's achievement as a smaller player

Since joining the Knicks in 2022, Brunson has become one of the league's best point guards. This is a perimeter player-driven league at this point, so being considered as one of the best shows Brunson's quality.

Unfortunately, there are still norms in the game, including how big men are the foundation for success. For the most part, that is correct, which is why there is validity to Becky Hammon's take on Brunson being a 1A star.

After years of falling short, Brunson managed to lead the Knicks to their first championship in over 50 years. That was a long time coming, not only for the Knicks but also for Brunson.

He has cemented his legacy as one of the best Knicks of all time. Brunson also proved that height is not his biggest issue because he proved he belonged as the top dog in a title-winning team, which Detroit Pistons legend Isiah Thomas is pleased to see.

"This is what we know as small people. Once we get our game right, we’re looking at everybody in the NBA saying, 'You can’t guard me.' What Jalen Brunson just proved again, when your game is tight and right, no matter what size you are, you become the best at what you do," Thomas said on the Crossover Podcast.

Thomas brings up a valid point because Brunson will continue to be proof that smaller guards have a place in the league. As long as they have the opportunity and the system around them, they could win a championship like Brunson, Thomas, and Curry.
