The Los Angeles Lakers are likely to be the center of attention all offseason long.
After shockingly poaching Luka Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks midway through the 2024-25 season, there’s no denying that fans understand the importance of staying on their toes when it comes to the franchise’s potential roster moves.
When it comes to a 41-year-old four-time NBA champion star forward who’s been linked to the Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers, and San Antonio Spurs, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst believes the Lakers will be the franchise to secure his services for the 2026-27 season.
“I think LeBron James’ intention is to play, and I think the focus right now is making a deal with the Lakers,” Windhorst said on ‘ESPN Cleveland’ Tuesday.
“Right now, he’s allowed to negotiate with the Lakers, and I believe they are negotiating. I believe they’re going back and forth. In the next 14 days, I think he’s going to try to make a deal with the Lakers.”
The battle for James in free agency will be one to monitor closely going forward. Even before Windhorst’s intel, returning to the Lakers seemed like the most logical option for the 22-time All-Star from a familiarity vantage point.
James’ stint with Los Angeles has lasted nearly a decade, and it isn’t far-fetched to suggest he’s comfortable in his third-ever NBA home.
Of course, re-signing won’t ensure that James will complete his 24th NBA season with the Lakers, as the 17-time NBA champions could use his new contract to help them land a two-way wing or versatile center in a blockbuster sign-and-trade.
In all likelihood, though, Los Angeles’ commitment to striking a new deal with James will result in an extended partnership.
