Pickens' minicamp attendance doesn't move needle on Cowboys season

· Yahoo Sports

Mandatory minicamp arrives Tuesday for the Dallas Cowboys, which means there could have been some anxious moments between the team and wide receiver George Pickens. The expectation is their franchise tagged WR will be in attendance, and he did show up to take his team physical on Monday.

The nervous moments ramped up a bit when he gave an answer of “uhhhh” when asked if he’d attend; without a firm response, the Pickens watch was on. This might have been a tense few days for the Cowboys and their fans, but the reality is Pickens being at minicamp holds almost no relevance for the 2026 season.

While it's great for the All-Pro WR to attend, these are glorified practices over the course of three days that won’t have much impact on the outcome of the upcoming campaign. Also, most teams cancel the last workout ahead of the offseason program, so Pickens wouldn’t be missing much if he did skip.

Pickens is contractually obligated to show up or risk being fined, but the cost isn’t prohibitive.

Paying almost $108,000 doesn’t seem like much when he’s scheduled to make over $27 million this season, so the fines aren’t a heavy deterrent.

What could be something that affected Pickens’ desire to show up is his reputation.

He was thought of as a bit of a headache before arriving in Dallas, but Pickens hasn’t given the team much to worry about since the trade. The veteran WR had the chance to live up to his former status earlier this offseason when he was given the franchise tag and the team advised they wouldn’t negotiate a long-term deal, but Pickens signed the tag.

Minicamp is the next opportunity for Pickens to demonstrate he’s a team player. Attending is something that could go a long way to proving to 32 NFL teams that he can produce at high-level on the field and be a good soldier off it.

This offseason there weren’t any suitors willing to trade for Pickens or give him a long-term deal, which was mostly because of his reputation. That can all change next March if he stays on the same path this season as he did last year. That starts with showing up at Cowboys’ minicamp.

Other than character concerns, there was no real reason for Pickens to attend. The football part of the equation has little to do with anything and the practices won’t add up to much when the season comes around.

Quarterback Dak Prescott has been throwing with Pickens this offseason, so they've gotten some work it together and training camp is where most of the timing gets worked out between the QB-WR. July and August are vastly more important for Pickens and the Cowboys than June.

Two things can be true; Pickens needed to be in attendance for minicamp because it’s important for his reputation and future. However, in the big picture of the Cowboys’ 2026 season, it holds little relevance for the team’s outlook.
