Your Oregon Ducks faced off against the Texas Longhorns on Saturday evening, in the first of a 3-game series with the right to move on to Omaha and the College Baseball World Series on the line. The game… did not go well for the Ducks. Oregon quickly found themselves down 4-0 after two innings, after some good clutch hitting from the Longhorns in both the bottom of the first and second innings. Texas would score one more in the 4th, and another two in the 5th, bolstering their lead to a commanding 7-0. The Ducks offense would show signs of life in the top of the 6th, earning two runs on back-to-back bases-loaded walks from Drew Smith and Brayden Jaksa, but they would leave the bags packed, ending their threat. 7-2 Texas. The Longhorns, however, would respond immediately, not just getting those two runs back, but adding one as well, to expand their lead to 10-2 after 6. Both teams would tack on a run in the 8th inning, but that would be all she wrote, and Texas would dominate the game 11-3.

Whelp. That one was… not great. But, as usual, I will try to focus on the positives. Namely: Oregon had SO many opportunities to score, which means they were getting on base. The Ducks were 0-14 with runners in scoring position (RISP) on Saturday. Call me “glass half full”, but I really don’t think the bats will be THAT cold again in the next game. The leadoff hitters for each inning were 4–9. Hell, the Ducks had one more hit than Texas did. The path to victory is there. And the main part of that path is to cut down on strikeouts, which have been an issue for a large portion of the season. Oregon struck out 15 times on Saturday, that cannot happen if you expect to compete with the big boys in college baseball. And while the Ducks themselves drew a good number of walks (9), they also surrendered 8. And Texas took full advantage of that, scoring four runs from players who walked.

Oregon played a little sloppy, on the road. Texas looked comfortable, in their home park. Time to flush this game and move on to the next one. It’s do-or-die now, y’all. Win or go home. Hopefully the boys can show some heart on Sunday and live on to fight another day.

As always, ‘Sco Ducks.
