MACKINAW CITY — Spring has a way of shuffling things around and being pretty unpredictable.

With district play already underway, many teams are still working to get in some final conference games in hopes of grabbing a league title and one of those teams this week was the Mackinaw City softball team.

Needing to meet up with Boyne Falls after a cancellation a week ago, the Comets saw the Loggers Wednesday night, earned the sweep and brought on a Northern Lakes Conference championship in the process.

While it’s an unpredictable season to schedule, Mackinaw City coach Erica France was sure of one thing this season, which ended up exactly right.

“We have said since day one, ‘You are all going to be hitters,’ and night after night, they have proven that,” France said. “Again, I can’t say enough how proud I am of these girls and how hard they have worked this season.”

France helped lead the Comets to a title in her first season in the dugout, which followed a 2023 title in Mackinaw.

Mackinaw City also shared a league title in 2022 and earned an outright title in 2019, which came as the program’s first conference championship since 1999.

Against Boyne Falls Wednesday, wins of 13-7 and 14-5 came for the Comets, with both wins had by Ella Kruczynski in the circle.

Kruczynski picked up eight strikeouts in the opener, then five more in game two. She also had an RBI double in the opener and four hits in game two, which included three doubles and two RBIs.

Kenzlie Currie finished with an inside-the-park home run and three RBIs in game one, Emily Holbrook doubled in a run in the opener and Rian Esper had an RBI single.

In game two, Currie doubled twice, tripled and drove in three runs, Esper doubled twice and had two RBIs, Emily Kruczynski singled, doubled and had an RBI and Julia Short singled twice and drove in a run.

The title will now come followed by a district tournament ahead for the Comets, which begins Friday, May 29 in Pellston with a matchup against the host Hornets at 1 p.m., followed then by a 3 p.m. matchup between Harbor Light Christian and Burt Lake NMCA.

A district championship game, beginning around 5 p.m. in Pellston, will follow both games.
