It's unfortunate that the Boston Red Sox have played this poorly throughout the year for many reasons.
Not only was this viewed as a team with a chance to compete in the American League East and possibly win a World Series if everything went well, but there were also some other unfortunate realities that Boston now had to deal with.
The Red Sox have multiple players who could be traded over the next few months, though there's now a belief they'd be selling low given how some guys have played this year.
That includes Jarren Duran, the former All-Star Game MVP, who is not having the season anyone was hoping for.
“Jarren Duran has long been a trade candidate, but he's having a miserable season so the Red Sox would be selling low. And presumably, they aren't going to be interested in trading Wilyer Abreu, so they don't have a ton offensively, unless Willson Contreras would again be willing to waive his no-trade clause,” Tim Kelly of BR wrote.
It almost sounds crazy that the Red Sox should stay put with any guys on their roster who are not going to be free agents at the end of the season.
Duran is arbitration-eligible in 2027, but he's not a free agent until 2029. The tough part here is that he isn't really young anymore at 29 years old, so the Red Sox could be wasting time moving him.
It's probably better to try to cut ties with him now and hopefully get a decent return, but that doesn't seem too likely right now.
