Eagles land an Edge Rusher in the latest 2027 mock draft

· Yahoo Sports

Way-too-early mock drafts are built on projection, guesswork, and a healthy amount of overreaction. They're fun conversation starters, but they also occasionally reveal how outsiders view a roster's long-term outlook. Philadelphia Eagles fans may want to feast their eyes on a recent theory offered by CBS Sports' Mike Renner.

In his latest 2027 NFL mock draft, something jumps off the page in Round 1 at pick 27. Renner has the Eagles selecting Oklahoma State Cowboys edge rusher Jaleel Johnson. As Renner states, he's the type of explosive pass rusher Philadelphia typically covets.

“The Eagles love twitched-up edge rushers, and Jaleel Johnson fits that mold,” Renner wrote. “At 6-foot-4 and 270 pounds, he explodes off the edge. While he’s a bit of a linear athlete, he can do serious damage as a bull-rusher.”

But why would they covet him on the first day of the selection process? That's a question that needs to be explored. The player fit makes sense. The implication doesn't. If this becomes a real conversation by April 2027, that would mean other uncomfortable conversations are being entertained.

For starters, pick No. 27 means Renner clearly doesn't see Philadelphia winning the Super Bowl. Fair enough. It's a projection, not a declaration. The bigger takeaway, however, is positional. If the Eagles are seriously in the market for a first-round edge rusher next spring, something almost certainly went sideways. Think about the current state of the room.

A deep dive into the Eagles' rotation at edge rusher

Philadelphia entered each of the past two draft cycles with edge rusher viewed as a notable need, yet they've worked aggressively to address it. They traded for Jonathan Greenard and immediately handed him an extension. Nolan Smith’s fifth-year option was exercised, and Arnold Ebiketie was added during the free agency frenzy.

Keyshawn James-Newby arrived via the draft. Jalyx Hunt remains one of the most intriguing young defenders on the roster after posting a 16.9% pressure rate, narrowly edging Jared Verse among defenders with at least 500 snaps. That’s a lot of investment, and don't forget the acquisition of potential international star Joshua Weru.

So, let's say everyone is again discussing an immediate need at edge rusher, and that has somehow circled back as a first-round priority by April. What could have happened to put Philadelphia back in that position? Might it be an injury? Multiple disappointments? A failed projection or two? All of the above?

Yes, you can never have enough quality pass rushers. The Eagles have lived by that philosophy for years, but being forced to spend premium draft capital on the position again, this soon, would suggest the current plan didn't unfold the way Philadelphia hoped, so while Jaleel Johnson may be a talented prospect and a logical schematic fit, Eagles fans probably shouldn't be celebrating this mock projection. They should instead hope this never becomes necessary.

There's a massive difference between adding strength and scrambling to fix a problem. If this projection becomes reality, Philadelphia's edge-rushing blueprint likely went off the rails, and that certainly won't be welcomed as great news by Eagles fans and an always-aggressive media.
