The Boston Red Sox have received a lot of criticism for their slow start this season. After making the playoffs last year, their disappointing start has been extra frustrating.

However, it's not as bad as it seems. The Red Sox enter play on Wednesday fourth in the AL East at 21-27. While that's 11.5 games behind the first-place Tampa Bay Rays, it's only two games out of a wild card spot.

By comparison, the 2025 Red Sox went 23-25 through their first 48 games and were three games out of a playoff spot, per NESN's Tom Caron.

Boston didn't take off until June last year and still made the postseason, so there's no reason the team can't do that again, especially with how weak the American League is. Once the Red Sox get Roman Anthony and Garrett Crochet back, start hitting and start playing better at Fenway Park, they could easily be in the playoff mix.

They've already started showing signs of life lately, winning three of their last four and going 12-10 over their last 22. They're playing cleaner baseball, and it's starting to translate into more wins.

With 114 games remaining, Boston still has 70 percent of its season left to right the ship. Last year's group did it, so time will tell if they can do it again.
