LeBron James is officially an unrestricted free agent after finishing his two-year, $101.3 million contract and completing a record-setting 23rd NBA season. Following the Los Angeles Lakers' sweep by the Oklahoma City Thunder, the franchise enters a critical transition period, trying to construct a contender around Luka Dončić while deciding James' future in Los Angeles.

ESPN analyst Brian Windhorst warned the team about mishandling talks with the star. “He’ll go somewhere else and play for less money,” he said if the Lakers force James out.

The sportswriter stressed that James will reject a $30M offer instead of $50M. James “doesn’t believe in that,” Windhorst added about the notion that his value dropped. “You better bring him a reason to take a pay cut,” Windhorst explained.

James “thinks it’s an insult,” the ESPN analyst noted about staying in L.A. for less. The Lakers missed Reaves for most of the first round and Dončić for the playoffs. Their run to the semifinals might have convinced James that another title shot is possible.

Lakers GM Rob Pelinka wants to keep the 4-time champion on the roster. “Of course any team, including ours, would love to have LeBron James on their roster,” Pelinka said

ESPN’s Dave McMenamin reported that the Lakers’ approach in talks will matter beyond money. A source told ESPN that James “loves it in L.A.” but the approach is key.

The Athletic reported both James and the Lakers want to continue their partnership. Agent Rich Paul said James “wants to compete for a championship” above all else.

Austin Reaves is expected to decline his $14.9M player option for the 2026-27 season. Team sources believe the roster can improve if the Lakers keep both James and Reaves.

James has not yet confirmed he will return for a 24th NBA season. The Warriors and Cavaliers could pursue James if he becomes available in free agency.

Pelinka’s skill in negotiating with the NBA’s all-time leading scorer could shape James’ next move.

James signed $2.7M below the max in 2024 in his last deal with Los Angeles. And this week, the Lakers were swept by the Thunder in the second round this season.
