The Pittsburgh Pirates' toolsy outfielder looks a lot different in Spring Training.
Simply put, Cruz has been in the weight room.
He didn't inherently need it to hit the ball far, throw it a long way or run fast. He already did all those things.
But adding some bulk to his frame could potentially help Cruz be more consistent over a long season.

Cruz used to be a lot lankier.
You can even see it in the picture atop this article, which is from last season. He is more filled out than that now.
Of course, that doesn't guarantee anything. Baseball is a hard game. Maybe Cruz will always be a bit too inconsistent.
But maybe, just maybe, he's found the right recipe to take a step forward. Pirates fans are sure hoping that's the case.
