FAMILY DUMPS BODY INSIDE CAPITEC BANK – HERE’S WHY
On social media platforms, clips of a family wheeling the body of a relative inside their local Capitec Bank in KwaDukuzahas attracted shock and outrage.
The disturbing clips and images have even made international news.
The body of an elderly woman was placed in a body bag and dumped inside the branch located on Chief Albert Luthuli Street. According to reports, after the woman’s death, the family of the deceased notified the bank to pay out her funeral policy funds.
The bank requested proof of death – via a death certificate. However, the frustrated family, having no money to bury their relative – took her corpse to Capitec Bank instead.
After a back-and-forth between both parties, the bank temporarily closed the branch due to health and safety issues. Police were called to intervene.

NOT THE FIRST TIME
It’s not the first time this has happened to a Capitec Bank branch in the same town.
In a separate incident last year, a family placed the body of a female relative in a coffin and took it to a branch in KwaDukuza Mall.
The family claimed that the bank had delayed the funeral policy payout. Instead of waiting 48 hours, the family was informed that funds would only be available in a month.
Having planned the funeral to take place, the frustrated relatives claimed they were unable to bury their loved one.
After public backlash, Capitec quickly paid out the policy.
In 2019, another family collected the body of their late male relative from the mortuary and took it straight to an Old Mutual office, also in KwaDukuza. They claimed the funeral policy payout had been delayed due to “further assessment”.
The insurance company expedited the release of funds after the incident.
