Three-Run Blast By Machado Gives Padres A 6-4 Win In Ten Innings Over Rangers

The San Diego Padres finally got some much needed production from Manny Machado today, as Machado drove in five runs and won the game with a three-run homer in the tenth inning to give the Padres a 6-4 win over the Texas Rangers.

The Padres reverted back to their usual pattern of being in a tight, low-scoring pitching duel to start, and they got on the board first against Rangers starter McKenzie Gore. The brief rally consisted of a pair of double from Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado to make it 1-0.

Buehler continued his run of strong starts early as the blanked the Rangers through five, but Texas broke through for a run in the sixth on back-to-back doubles by Josh Jung and Wyatt Langford to make it 1-1.

That was it for Buehler, as Kyle Hart took over to limit the damage. But the Rangers got two more off reliever Jason Adam in the seventh as Jarred Kelenic singled and Jake Burger hit a two-run homer.

The Padres quickly countered to tie the game off reliever Cole Winn as Tatis doubled, Samad Taylor singled and Machado got a run home with a groundout. Jackson Merrill singled to bring home Taylor and tie the game at 3-3 going into the ninth.

Jacob Latz stayed in after pitching a scoreless ninth, but trouble came calling when he walked Samad Taylor with Tatis, who was the ghost runner, on second. Manny Machado then ended the suspense about how that would end as he lined a three-run homer to left to give the Padres a 6-3 lead.

Craig Stammen saved closer Mason Miller for the 10th, which turned out to be a smart move. A fly ball to center moved ghost runner Elias Diaz to third, but Miller then struck out Jo Jung. He surrendered an infield hit to Langford that got Diaz home to make it 6-4, but Miller made that run meaningless by striking out Brandon Nimmo to end the game and pick up his 20th save of the season.

The victory evened the series at 1-1, but the more important issue was whether it represents some kind of turning point for Machado. He has had 13 home runs, but that average of well below .200 has become mroe than just an eyesore for both him and the Padres.

The Padres will send Lucas Giolito to the hill in the rubber game tomorrow, but the Rangers haven’t listed their starter as of yet.
