Exeter’s 4x800 relay captures New Balance national championship

PHILADELPHIA — The Exeter High School girls track 4x800-meter relay team are national champions.

The quartet of Bri Paterna, Madie Poteet, Izzy Bremer and Lexi Paterna bested a field of 75 relay teams at the New Balance Nationals Outdoor Championships, crossing the finish line first in 8 minutes, 49.48 seconds at Franklin Field.

“Perfect execution, and every single girl did their job and competed their hearts out for each other,” Exeter coach Nate Leveille said. “This is a very special group, and they did something absolutely amazing tonight.”

According to Exeter High School’s Joe Scascitell, the time is the fastest in championship meet history by a New England team.

The foursome of Courtney Krawiecki, Anna McGaffin, Leyla Bhusri and Riley Lynch of Shenendehowa (N.Y.) placed second in 8:52.23, while Kennedy Bryant, Riley Jones, Kimani Tindal and Shirayah Lewis-Williams of Long Beach, Calif., were third in 8:58.60.

Lexi Paterna will run in the New Balance Nationals Outdoor Championship girls mile on Saturday, June 20, and the distance medley relay team of Bremer, Bri Paterna, Lexi Paterna and Martelle McBride will compete Sunday, June 21.
