South African universities have strengthened their position on the global stage, with the majority of the country’s top institutions improving their standing in the latest US News Best Global Universities rankings.

The 2026/27 rankings include 15 South African universities among the world’s top 2,000 institutions, with nine universities climbing higher than they were a year ago.
The results highlight a strong year for South African higher education, particularly among the country’s leading research institutions, with several universities recording significant jumps in the global standings.
UCT remains South Africa’s top university
The University of Cape Town retained its position as South Africa’s highest-ranked university and remains the only local institution within the world’s top 150 universities.
UCT improved slightly from 124th position in 2025 to 122nd globally in the latest ranking.
The University of the Witwatersrand also posted a strong performance, climbing 25 places to rank 240th globally, cementing its position as the country’s second-best university.
Meanwhile, the University of Johannesburg and Stellenbosch University both broke into the global top 300.
UJ climbed from 319th to 281st worldwide, while Stellenbosch improved from 322nd to 299th.
The latest results also mean that South Africa now has four universities ranked among the world’s top 300 institutions.
Major gains across the rankings
While the country’s top universities continue to dominate, several institutions further down the rankings also posted impressive improvements.
The University of Pretoria moved up 43 places to rank 417th globally, overtaking the University of KwaZulu-Natal to become South Africa’s fifth-highest-ranked university.
The University of the Western Cape enjoyed one of the largest improvements among local universities, jumping from 714th to 657th globally.
The University of South Africa also made substantial gains, climbing nearly 100 places from 869th to 770th.
The number one university globally, as per the rankings, is Harvard University.

More than 2 250 universities were assessed globally, with institutions evaluated using 13 indicators designed to measure research impact, influence and international recognition.
The two most heavily weighted indicators are global research reputation and regional research reputation, which together account for 25% of a university’s overall score.
Research output also plays a major role, with factors such as publications, citations, highly cited papers and international collaboration carrying significant weight.
Universities that consistently produce influential research and collaborate with leading international institutions tend to perform best in the rankings.
