The Cincinnati Reds might not be in the driver's seat for a postseason spot right now, with their 34-37 record being dead last in the NL Central, but they're still very much capable of going on a run.
This Reds team might sell some rental options at the trade deadline, but they could also look to trade for players who will be around for more than one season, with the bullpen a high priority for this team.
However, a reunion in a trade with Boston Red Sox closer Aroldis Chapman, according to Jim Bowden of The Athletic, looks to be a long shot at best.
Reds get bad news on trade odds for Aroldis Chapman
"The Reds have made it clear that bullpen is their No. 1 priority, but trading for a 'rental' such as Chapman doesn't make much sense because their team is just not good enough to make that type of deal," Bowden writes.
For MLB teams around the league, trading for Chapman would be the clear best reliever upgrade they could add this summer by the August 3 trade deadline.
He has a 0.44 ERA this season in 20.1 innings pitched for the Red Sox and has been one of the best closers in baseball. Any team in need of bullpen help should consider Chapman.

The Reds are likely one of those teams that would have interest in Chapman. A reunion would be fun, but in reality, it's not likely at all with the Reds' uncertain playoff status.
If they were in better shape for the division or the Wild Card, then maybe Chapman would make more sense. But, since the cost is going to be so high, and the Reds might not even make the postseason, trading for him now wouldn't make sense.
Cincinnati isn't in good enough shape for the postseason to strongly consider a Chapman trade, and with there likely to be plenty of other teams willing to pay a high price to add him this summer, the Reds aren't a likely landing spot for a reunion with the closer.
