The Boston Red Sox made multiple moves this offseason to bolster their starting rotation.

Boston improved its rotation early on in the offseason, trading for three-time All-Star Sonny Gray, then doubled down, acquiring Ranger Suárez and Johan Oviedo. The Red Sox's starting rotation appeared set at the start of the season with Garrett Crochet, Suárez, Gray, Brayan Bello and Connelly Early, but things have changed since then.
Multiple Red Sox pitchers have missed significant time, including Crochet and Oviedo, and Bello has struggled so much that he was demoted to Triple-A. All of the openings in the rotation paved the way for 23-year-old hurler Payton Tolle, who has excelled this season, posting a 2.70 ERA across nine starts.
Bleacher Report's Tim Kelly named Tolle the Red Sox's biggest breakout player of the season as he continues to dominate.
"Payton Tolle was outpitched by the aforementioned Schlittler in ALWCS Game 3 last season, but he also is having a breakout campaign in 2026," Kelly wrote on Thursday. "Across eight starts, Tolle has pitched to a 2.28 ERA, meaning he's been as effective as any arm in a rotation that includes Garrett Crochet (currently on the injured list), Sonny Gray and Ranger Suárez.
"The encouraging thing is that some of the advanced metrics that were trending in a negative direction early in the year now suggest that what he's doing is sustainable. In addition to the 2.28 ERA, the 23-year-old now has a 2.32 expected ERA and 2.66 FIP."
Tolle has allowed two or fewer runs in six of his nine starts and has become a key part of the Red Sox's rotation. Though Boston's season has been disappointing, Tolle's emergence has been one of the bright spots this year.
