Diamondbacks-Marlins live updates. Carroll HR, Lovullo defends Marte

MIAMI — The Diamondbacks took the early lead here Tuesday, June 9, at loanDepot Park, on Corbin Carroll's 11th home run of the season, but starter Zac Gallen hasn't been able to hold the advantage and Arizona trails 2-1 as play continued in the third inning.

Connor Norby and Xavier Edwards have the Marlins' RBIs off Gallen, who has allowed four hits and has struck out two in two innings through 37 pitches.

Ketel Marte and Geraldo Perdomo have singled for the Diamondbacks.

Lovullo defends Marte

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo took time before his pregame comments at loanDepot Park on Tuesday, June 9, to defend one of his star players, Ketel Marte.

A USA TODAY Sports report this past weekend made brief note that Marte "continues to frustrate segments of the organization" by asking for days off. Marte's most recent missed game was June 3 against the Dodgers at home, and when he gets a day off, it is typically after a conversation with Lovullo about how he feels.

Marte sat against Dodgers pitcher Shohei Ohtani that day, and Ohtani dominated the Diamondbacks. The next day, Marte was in the lineup, and he won the game with a walk-off home run.

Lovullo said the narrative that Marte is causing a problem in the clubhouse is "slipping out from underneath us a little bit."

"I can wholeheartedly tell you that Ketel has been an unbelievable player for the Arizona Diamondbacks for a long period of time," Lovullo said. "There are days off that are needed, they're fairly scripted and we ask for his input. When the athlete gives us input, we're going to listen.

"But there's this underlying theme that he's not a good teammate, and it's pulling at the fabric of the clubhouse chemistry, which is not true at all."

Marte played in his 62nd game of the season on Tuesday in Miami. Only Geraldo Perdomo and Corbin Carroll have played in more games this season, one more each.

Marte has dealt with back and hamstring problems this season and Lovullo has rested him periodically to keep those injuries from leading to an injured list stint.

Lovullo said idea that something is wrong inside the clubhouse because of Marte "couldn't be further from the truth." He said Marte is about being a good teammate and winning games.

"He's going to help us win baseball games. He's going to help us get to where we want to," Lovullo said. "It's just one of those things where it's spinning away from us, and I want to make sure I address it and defend the player, because I believe in the player and I know the player."

Lovullo says he believes Marte pays attention to what is written about him, and the players have feelings so he wanted to say something.

Dave McKay absent, injury updates

The Diamondbacks don't have first base coach Dave McKay for the Marlins series, as McKay is away from the team for a personal matter. Assistant hitting coach Travis Denker is filling in for McKay this week.

Outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. is playing in a complex league game Tuesday, playing left field and DH. Utility player Jordan Lawlar is closest to coming back from his injury, as he continues a rehab assignment in Reno.

Left-handed pitcher A.J. Puk had a planned minor pullback in his rehab but will throw a bullpen session this weekend, Lovullo said.
