Speaking publicly for the first time this offseason, the veteran quarterback revealed that contract extension talks with the Buccaneers have not progressed as he hoped. Mayfield told reporters that negotiations are “not anywhere close to what we were thinking,” adding that it is “time to get something done long-term.” He also established a firm deadline, saying he does not want discussions to continue once training camp starts.

Mayfield is entering the final year of the three-year, $100 million contract he signed with Tampa Bay in 2024. The deal carries an average annual value of $33.3 million, making him the NFL’s 16th-highest-paid quarterback. Among quarterbacks who are not on rookie contracts or serving as bridge backups, only Malik Willis and Aaron Rodgers earn less annually.

Mayfield seeks long-term Buccaneers deal

The timing of the negotiations is significant given Mayfield’s production since arriving in Tampa Bay. In 2024, he delivered the best season of his career, completing 407 of 540 passes (71.4%) for 4,500 yards, 41 touchdowns and 16 interceptions while posting a 106.8 passer rating and earning a Pro Bowl selection. He followed that performance with another productive campaign in 2025, throwing for 3,693 yards, 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while starting all 17 games. Mayfield also added 382 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown. Over the last two seasons, he has combined for 8,193 passing yards and 67 touchdown passes, helping the Buccaneers win consecutive NFC South titles and remain one of the NFC’s most consistent playoff contenders.

His success has helped reshape the perception of both his career and the Buccaneers’ future. Since taking over as Tampa Bay’s starter following Tom Brady’s retirement, Mayfield has provided stability at the game’s most important position while leading the franchise to sustained success. His production over the past two seasons compares favorably with several quarterbacks earning significantly more than his current average annual salary.

Despite the stalled talks, Mayfield emphasized that Tampa Bay remains where he wants to play. He noted that his family has established roots in the area and reiterated his commitment to the organization. However, he also made it clear that his focus will shift entirely to football if a new agreement is not reached before camp opens.

The Buccaneers view extending Mayfield as a priority. With quarterback salaries continuing to climb across the league and Mayfield coming off back-to-back productive seasons, the coming weeks could determine whether Tampa Bay secures its franchise quarterback for years to come or allows negotiations to linger into the season.
