Per a news release from VT, a fourth-generation Hokie family donated $75 million to the school, with the majority of the funds going to the athletic department and a “sizeable” number headed for the Honors College. The unrestricted funds can be used how the athletic director of Virginia Tech sees fit.

Franklin believes the money headed to the athletic department can help build a winning football program.

“This transformative commitment will have a tremendous impact on our football program and the young men who wear the Virginia Tech uniform,” Franklin said, via the release. “Football is the front porch of the University, and sustained investment is critical to competing for championships at the highest level.

“This generosity provides the resources necessary to recruit, develop and support elite student-athletes while positioning Virginia Tech Football for long-term success. We are incredibly grateful for this belief in our program and our vision for sustained success.”

Athletic director Whit Babcock is set to retire on July 1. Franklin has been active in helping Virginia Tech find its next athletic director, hoping to find a partner who understands football is important.

“We’re in a much different position now than we were, but I think there’s also a realization that we haven’t had success in football in a long period of time,” Franklin told ESPN in May. “There comes responsibility, and there comes pressure for that, for me and the football program specifically.

“So being able to get an AD that’s going to come in here and hit the ground running and be bold and aggressive with football in mind is going to be really important. It’s going to be in everybody’s best interest, because when football is successful, all the other ships rise.”

With a sizable donation coming to the new athletic director, Franklin has big stakes in who becomes the next hire. If the AD spends wisely, VT could compete for a College Football Playoff spot in the near future.
