The province’s police watchdog is investigating after a 21-year-old male cyclist was seriously injured while being arrested by Toronto Police officers last weekend.

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit says at around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday the officers attempted to stop a cyclist for failing to stop at a stop sign on Queens Quay W. near Little Norway Park.

There was an interaction between officers and the cyclist, and the man was arrested, ticketed under the Highway Traffic Act and released from custody.

The man sought medical attention in hospital and was diagnosed with a serious, non-life-threatening injury.

“The SIU invoked its mandate after it was notified by the affected person’s lawyer,” the SIU said in a statement.

Two investigators have been assigned to the case and SIU investigators are in the process of obtaining body worn camera footage of the incident.

The SIU is urging anyone withe information about this investigation, including video or photos, to call the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.
