What Knicks legend Charles Oakley described to TMZ Sports about his relationship with Patrick Ewing goes far beyond a typical dispute between former teammates. According to Oakley, the friendship they built during their decade together in New York has completely unraveled.

Oakley said the breakdown didn’t happen all at once. Instead, he described a gradual deterioration of the relationship that culminated in a moment in Cleveland that he viewed as a turning point.

For basketball fans who grew up watching the 1990s Knicks, Oakley and Ewing were closely linked. They were key figures on New York teams known for their physical style of play and multiple deep playoff runs.

Oakley, who served as the team’s enforcer during much of that era, said he took pride in doing the physical work that helped create opportunities for Ewing on the court.

So when Oakley found himself at the center of a highly publicized incident at Madison Square Garden in 2017, he said he expected to hear from Ewing.

According to Oakley, that never happened.

“Patrick is not the big man enough to come and talk to me after I had his back for 10 years. He’s a coward,” Oakley said in a video posted on YouTube.

Oakley said Ewing had visited his mother’s house numerous times over the years, which, in his view, reflected a relationship that extended beyond basketball.

The final straw, Oakley said, came when he attended a game in Cleveland and saw Ewing there.

“Many times he’d been in my mother’s house, he can’t speak to me? No. I’m drawing lines. That’s the line. I mean, I played with him for 10 years. He’s just not a good person,” Oakley said.

Oakley also recalled an incident involving Ewing and a carry-on bag during a flight, saying he defended his teammate when others did not.

According to Oakley, that support was not reciprocated during his own public dispute with the Knicks.
