Stephon Castle’s Mom Calls Out Overreactions Following Spurs’ Disappointing Game 1 Setback vs. Knicks

· Yahoo Sports

In Game 1 of the NBA Finals, Stephon Castle and the San Antonio Spurs lost 105-95 to the New York Knicks because they were unable to defend their home court. Despite having home court advantage, the Spurs were outplayed by the more experienced Knicks squad. Some fans started to panic as the Spurs fell to a 1-0 lead in the series.

However, Castle’s mother, Quannette Castle, doesn’t want fans to lose control and get frustrated after just one loss. On X, she reminded the fans that the Spurs also lost Game 1 of the second-round of the postseason against the Minnesota Timberwolves. San Antonio was able to bounce back and win the series after six games.

Stephon Castle’s mother shared the supporters’ desire to win every game. But she did suggest that they take the series one game at a time, just like most players do.

“I want to win every GAME too.. but stop jumping ship after one game. I’m sure we remember game one against Minnesota.. we had some very important people in the basketball community immediately jump ship.. we know how that worked out.. let’s not do that.. please.. Geesh,” she posted on X.

“We got this true spurs fans… WE must play better and we will! GSG️️”

Castle had a somewhat productive game with 17 points, eight rebounds and three assists on 43.8% shooting. He struggled to make 3-pointers and shot 1-for-5 from deep.

Stephon Castle has been the Spurs’ best perimeter defender this postseason. In the earlier rounds, Castle was tasked to guard the opposing team’s best players. For the NBA Finals, nothing changed, and he will defend the Knicks’ best player, Jalen Brunson.

Ahead of Game 1, the former UConn star discussed his approach in guarding Brunson by comparing how he defended Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder.

“The biggest thing I’ll have to take away from that series and moving on to this one is probably my discipline, especially guarding the ball one-on-one,” Castle said.

“Shai uses a lot of deception and pump fakes, sweep throughs and trying to keep him off the free throw line is tough at times but I think Brunson being a smaller guard is probably gonna be amplified a lot more. Just trying to keep him off his spots as much as I can.”

Castle said that the Spurs need to stay disciplined, not to allow Brunson to dribble his way to his spots and fall for his pump fakes.
