Deion Sanders calls his 2026 coaching staff 'the best of his career'

Deion Sanders is not hiding his confidence in the direction of Colorado football. With a reshaped staff and a roster built more deliberately through the transfer portal, Sanders said the Buffs are in a better position heading into 2026 than they were a year ago.

"We’re gonna win, and we got to win. We have the best coaching staff that I’ve ever been a part of in my coaching career," Sanders said in an interview with Baker Machado for Front Office Sports.

That is a strong statement, but it comes after a 2025 season that exposed plenty of flaws. Colorado finished 3-9 and struggled to find any real consistency on either side of the ball. In response, Sanders made several key changes, including bringing in Brennan Marion as offensive coordinator, Chris Marve as defensive coordinator and notable Georgia high school coach Josh Niblett as tight ends coach.

Staff Changes

The coaching overhaul was not just about bringing in big names like in previous years. Colorado needed different voices, especially after a season where the offense and defense never quite clicked. Sanders has clearly added coaches who can teach, lead, and connect with players more directly. Perhaps the most important factor is that almost all the new hires have college coaching experience.

Portal Reset

Sanders also said the Buffs were far more selective in the portal this offseason. He described a process that focused on fit, talent and character, with staff members studying each player closely before bringing them to Boulder. Players like DeAndre Moore Jr. (WR, Texas), Boo Carter (DB, Tennessee), and Liona Lefau (LB, Texas) are just a few who will make an immediate impact in Boulder.

The change in approach matters because Colorado needed to identify roster fits rather than simply targeting the best players. It needs players who can help immediately and help change the culture. Sanders believes this group can do that, and 2026 will show whether that confidence is justified.
