Before their playoff game against the Orlando Storm on Sunday, the Defenders signed pass rusher Andre Mintze earlier this week. Mintze (6-3, 246 pounds) originally entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of Vanderbilt with the Denver Broncos in 2021. After making the 53-man roster, Mintze played in six games with the Broncos before landing on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. He totaled four tackles in those six appearances.
Following his stint in Denver, Mintze spent training camp with the Minnesota Vikings in 2022, but he failed to make their 53-man roster. He was then drafted by the Defenders, who played in the XFL at the time. Mintze totaled four sacks through his first two seasons in DC before a 5.5-sack campaign in 2025 (tied for third-most in the UFL that spring).

Mintze did not re-sign with the Defenders following the 2025 campaign, and he did not play in the 2026 regular season this spring. With the playoffs set to begin this weekend, though, the 27-year-old edge defender is back in the league just in time for a title push.
The winner of the DC-Orlando game will advance to face either the Louisville Kings or St. Louis Battlehawks in the 2026 United Bowl on June 13.
