Arizona Cardinals gained cap space after important calendar date

Tuesday was an important day for many teams when it comes to the salary cap. It was the day that teams who released players with a post-June 1 designation received cap relief.
That happened for the Arizona Cardinals, who released quarterback Kyler Murray after the start of the league year in March.

Murray was due to count about $52.7 million against the salary cap.
With a post-June 1 designation, the $52.7 million cap hit remained in force until June 2. On Tuesday, the Cardinals incurred dead money charges of $47.5 million, giving the Cardinals about $5 million in cap savings in 2026. They will carry the remaining $7.2 million in dead money in 2027.
Murray has since signed with the Minnesota Vikings. They are paying him the league-minimum salary of about $1.3 million, and the Cardinals are on the hook for the remaining roughly $35.5 million he was due this year.
The Cardinals now have about $35.1 million in cap space, according to Over the Cap, the sixth-highest total in the league.
