Competing in his home country for the first time in eight years, the Chinese bantamweight stunned former champion Deiveson Figueiredo with a second-round guillotine choke Saturday in the main event of UFC Macau.
After a largely inactive opening frame, Song (23-9-1, 1 NC) snatched Figueiredo’s neck off a failed takedown attempt with time winding down in the second, ultimately securing the fight-ending submission at the 4:42 mark of the round to set off a raucous celebration inside Macau’s Galaxy Arena.
“I don’t give a f***, I take whatever you guys give me. Let’s go,” a fired-up Song said post-fight about his potential next step.”
“[This is] the best moment of my life so far,” he added while leaving the cage.
With the win, Song, 28, successfully rebounds from his January loss to Sean O'Malley and regains his footing as one of the top contenders in the UFC’s loaded 135-pound division.
The same cannot be said for Figueiredo (25-7-1). The former two-time UFC flyweight champion is now just 1-4 over his past five bouts in the bantamweight division, likely signaling the end of his time as a title contender at age 38.
Elsewhere on the card, the hard-hitting trio of Alonzo Menifield (18-6-1), Sergei Pavlovich (21-3) and Kai Asakura (22-6) all scored big first-round knockout wins over Zhang Mingyang (19-8), Tallison Teixeira (9-2) and Cameron Smotherman (12-7), respectively.
