Isaac Paredes is giving Houston Astros general manager Dana Brown a few things to consider.
Stepping into the batter's box at Globe Life Field on Thursday night, Paredes faced Texas Rangers starter Nathan Eovaldi and connected on a first-inning, two-run home run, giving the Astros a three-run lead three batters into the game.
The 357-foot line drive homer proved to be the winning runs in the 5-1 win. With six homers this season, Paredes continues to shake off a slow start and provide more data for Brown to analyze.
The third-place Astros (26-32) trailed the AL West-leading Seattle Mariners by 2.5 games, entering Friday's series opener against the visiting Milwaukee Brewers. Competing in a winnable division, Paredes, who is nearing a personal power milestone, possesses enough offensive potential to carry a club for long stretches.
He could be a key to the Astros claiming their eighth division title since 2017.
Or he may be utilized as a veteran trade asset, triggering a franchise rebuild.
Brown has a decision to make on the Astros' future.
Will he focus on a long-term solution? Or short-term?

Batting second at Dalkin Park on Friday, Paredes grounded into a first-inning double play. In the third, the two-time All-Star grounded into a fielder's choice and struck out in the fifth and eighth. The teams were tied at 4-all in the eighth frame.
Two home runs shy of 100 for his career, Paredes ranked fourth in MLB homers among players of Mexican heritage. He trails Vinicio Castilla (320), Jorge Orta (130) and Aurelio Rodriguez (124)
The Astros have not finished lower than third in the division since 2015. Despite being six games under .500 entering Friday, the Astros still had legitimate playoff aspirations.
Talent-wise, the 2026 edition certainly wouldn't match the George Springer-led squad that captured the 2017 World Series, but Brown will soon have to make a decision on veterans like Paredes, who is making $9.35 million this season. The club owns a 2027 option for $13.5 million.
The Astros have not finished lower than third place since 2015.
Should Brown focus on long-term priorities and deal Paredes to help restock the farm system? Or go for short-term glory?
