The World Cup is right around the corner and right after the DFB-Pokal final vs. VfB Stuttgart in Berlin, most of Bayern Munich’s players will get set to join their national teams for this summer’s tournament. It will be a quick turnaround for the international players, but such is the nature of the modern schedules with domestic seasons, cup competitions, and international matches, whether it be friendlies, qualifiers, or actual tournaments.

For left back Alphonso Davies, there’s been a lot of question marks regarding his current health and fitness as the Canadian international has been dealing with a hamstring injury towards the end of Bayern’s season. The most recent muscular injury has compounded the frustration of having missed most of the beginning of the season due to the cruciate ligament tear he suffered playing with Canada at the CONCACAF Nations League back in March of 2025. That injury sparked a lot of controversy between Bayern and the Canadian Soccer Federation as Davies really should not have played in the third place match against the United States, as playing him proved to be incredibly consequential and it’s taken him quite some time to get back to fitness.

Bayern’s front office has said they don’t want the Canadian federation to pressure Davies too heavily into risking his health and fitness to be in their World Cup squad, but club president Herbert Hainer recently said that they’re not overly concerned with the matter. “There’s no concern, because there is very close coordination between the medical departments of FC Bayern and Canada. Of course, he has a huge desire to play at the World Cup in his country. On the other hand, he also knows very well that he still has many years ahead of him, and that he must prioritize his health above everything else. But as I said, there’s very close coordination between the medical departments, and they will handle it properly,” Hainer explained to Bild (via @iMiaSanMia).

While there is communication between Bayern and Canada, Davies still has an incredibly difficult verdict to be reached and dealt with. He’s been outspoken about the depression he suffered in the recovery from his cruciate ligament injury and would be justifiably gutted to miss out on the World Cup with Canada, especially as one of the three host nations for the tournament. At the end of the day, it’s a calculated risk for Bayern, Canada, and Davies, but opportunities to play in the World Cup on your home soil maybe come around once in a lifetime.

The Canadian national team is set to officially announce their World Cup roster on the 29th, so we’ll soon know the fate of Davies’ participation or lack thereof this summer, but it’s highly likely the decision to bring or not bring him will be leaked prior to the 29th.
