For the third year in a row, Florida softball will play a win-or-go-home super regional game.

This season, though, the battle comes a game earlier.

UF lost its first Game 1 of Super Regionals since 2022 Friday with a 10-8 defeat to Texas Tech in the NCAA Gainesville Super Regional.

It was an instant classic Friday afternoon at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium. Florida scored first in the third inning, but the Red Raiders tallied seven runs in a row. The Gators trailed 7-1 and seemed on its way to a third consecutive defeat by run-rule.

That’s when Florida turned it on and came back in dramatic fashion. UF scored seven runs over the next two innings – all by home runs. Ava Brown’s second of the game, off two-time National Player of the Year NiJaree Canady, tied it at eight in the sixth inning.

However, Florida ultimately came up short as Mia Williams knocked a two-run home run to take the 10-8 lead in her return to Gainesville.

Now, the Gators will need to play for their season. Only 21 percent of teams have lost a Super Regional Game 1 and won the series, but UF has done that twice – in 2017 vs. Alabama and 2022 at Virginia Tech.

Can Florida get one step closer to three times a charm?
