Richard Childress Racing makes major decision on Kyle Busch’s No. 8

The NASCAR world is in mourning following the tragic death of legendary driver Kyle Busch, who passed away suddenly on Thursday, May 21.

Busch had been hospitalized earlier in the day, before his shocking death at age 41.

Following Busch’s death, it was reported that Austin Hill was set to replace Busch this weekend in the Richard Childress Racing No. 8 car at the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. However, that will no longer be the case.

Richard Childress Racing released a statement on Friday, May 22, announcing that it would be suspending the use of the No. 8 car out of respect for Busch.

A makeshift memorial was made in front of the Daytona International Speedway tours building for NASCAR driver Kyle Busch, May 22, 2026, who died suddenly May 21, 2026.

“Richard Childress Racing has elected to suspend use of the No. 8 and will run the No. 33 at Charlotte Motor Speedway and beyond. Kyle Busch was instrumental in the design of RCR’s stylized No. 8, and it has become synonymous with Kyle and an important symbol for his fans and the NASCAR industry,” the statement read.

The race team then made the touching gesture of saying the number would be reserved for Busch’s son, Brexton, who celebrated his 11th birthday just days before Busch’s passing.

“No one can carry it forward to the level that he did. The No. 8 is reserved and ready for Brexton Busch when he is ready to go NASCAR racing,” the statement concluded.

The Coca-Cola 600 is set to take place on Sunday, May 24, at 6:00 p.m. ET. There will certainly be some heartfelt tributes to Busch throughout the weekend.
