The Athlete of the Week, presented by our friends at Glen Oaks Community College, is once again live. It may seem like a strange time to be posting the athlete of the week poll, and you may be right, but in moving it around so far this spring I am gaining some information on when is best to have it going next year on a consistent basis.

I promise you it's for something good here. Anyway, with seniors being done at local high schools and the school year coming to a close, I pushed this week's back to Friday.

It's Memorial Day weekend and plenty of people will be on their phones for a variety of reasons, I thought this might be a good time to have the athlete of the week poll posted for people to vote.

Not all ideas are good ones, but I think it's worth a shot. The poll will be open until Monday evening at 7 p.m. and you can once again vote as many times as you'd like.

You can also vote for more than one athlete at a time.

Happy voting and please do so responsibly. Here are the nominees

Sydney Bir, Sturgis track — Sydney Bir qualified for the MHSAA state track and field finals in four events. She set the record for Sturgis in the 400 run in winning the regional title on Friday and will compete in the 800, mile and two-mile relays for the Trojans.

Jaedyn Herlein, Constantine track — Jaedyn Herlein is headed to the state finals to compete in four events as well for Constantine. She qualified for both the 100 and 300 hurdle events, finishing second place in both at regionals. Herlein will also be a part of two state relay teams in the 800 and mile for the Falcons.

Matthew Bates, Centreville track — Matthew Bates has been one of the most consistent throwers in Southwest Michigan this year. He won the regional title last week in the shot put at 54-10 feet and was second in the discus as well at 164-3 feet.

Brayden Fritz, Bronson track — Brayden Fritz has also been one of the most consistent throwers in Southwest Michigan this year. He dominated the discus event at regionals, throwing an impressive 174-9 feet to win by more than 10 feet. Fritz was second in the shot put behind Bates at just over 52 feet.

Madison Shaw, Bronson softball — Madison Shaw pitched Bronson to a victory over Berrien Springs at the Polish Classic on Saturday. She threw a perfect game in the victory, striking out 11 would-be Shamrocks in the process. Shaw also had a pair of base hits and stole two bases for the Vikings.
