Finally, on April 22, the San Diego Padres signed the veteran starting pitcher. He has made four minor league starts as he prepares to enter San Diego's rotation.
On Wednesday, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reported that Giolito is expected to make his season debut this weekend against the Seattle Mariners.
Giolito's call-up means the Padres will have to make a tough roster decision.
"The likeliest scenario would see righty Matt Waldron bumped from the roster. The 29-year-old knuckleballer opened the season on the injured list and has been hit hard since his return," Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumors wrote. "In five appearances (three starts), he’s pitched 21 1/3 innings and been tagged for 22 runs (9.28 ERA) on 32 hits and seven walks."

Giolito, an All-Star with the Chicago White Sox in 2019, was sidelined the entire 2024 season due to an internal brace repair procedure.
He made 26 starts in 2025 with the Boston Red Sox and posted a 3.41 ERA with 121 strikeouts in 145 innings.
