Up to $145 million in additional funds is being made available by the federal government to bolster security in Toronto and Vancouver during the World Cup.

Gary Anandasangaree, minister of Public Safety, said at a press conference in Toronto on Wednesday that the funds are for “security operations” in both host cities this summer.

Canada is co-hosting the global soccer tournament with the United States and Mexico, which runs from June 11 to July 19.

Toronto will be the site of six games while seven other matches will take place in Vancouver.

What the government said

The government said the extra money will help reduce the financial burden the cities and provinces will face while hosting one of the more complicated sporting events.

“This funding will support provinces and municipalities in their efforts to ensure people remain safe while enjoying the tournament, and ensure law enforcement agencies have the resources they need to deliver a safe and well-managed event,” Anandasangaree told reporters.

He said the money is in addition to the $230 million that the government allocated in January 2023 as well as $100 million to support federal police.

RCMP officers will handle national security and VIP protection while Toronto and Vancouver police will take care of local enforcement.
