Mumbai: In a unique blend of heritage conservation and urban renewal, the Mumbai Port Trust is redeveloping long-forgotten World War II-era bunkers in south Mumbai’s Ballard Estate into a public space featuring greenery, open areas, and modern design elements.
The site, located on SS Ramgoolam Marg, was previously in a state of neglect, filled with debris and waste and had reportedly become a hub for illegal activities. Following an extensive clean-up, authorities have now begun efforts to convert it into a public-facing urban space.

Details On The Project
According to a Mid-day report, central to the project are the historic bunkers, believed to date back to the 1940s during World War II. Built as reinforced concrete structures, they were likely used for defence and operational purposes during the wartime period. Officials say the bunker will be preserved and enhanced with historical information, making it the focal point of the redevelopment.
"That remains the star attraction. We shall not only save it, but also enhance it with historical facts and the importance of the place," a person associated with the project said, as quoted by Mid-day. "We shall also embellish it so that it becomes a place of attraction by making it into a selfie point and an influencer spot," the person added.
The proposed plan includes an open-air garden food court, landscaped green areas with red soil, and tree cover to create a natural, shaded environment. A glass pod installation and a dedicated panel wall narrating the history of Ballard Estate are also part of the design.

Once completed, the project is expected to offer a distinctive public space that combines history, leisure and green infrastructure in the heart of south Mumbai.
