She provided no timeline on when the position would be filled, only saying the move would happen “in the coming weeks.”

Anand made the announcement Thursday while delivering remarks during the inaugural Ottawa Civic Space Summit, held in downtown Ottawa at the National Arts Centre.

Position established under Trudeau government in 2019

The position of E nvoy for Women, Peace and Security was established during the former Justin Trudeau government in 2019 — a role meant to advise the government on Canada’s National Action Plan on women, peace and security.

Launched in 2011 and currently in its third iteration, the action plan was meant to act as a framework to shape policy concerning gender equality and the protection of women and gender diverse people.

Jacqueline O’Neill, a Canadian diplomat, served as Canada’s first and only E nvoy for Women, Peace and Security, with her term coming to an end in March 2025, shortly after Mark Carney replaced Trudeau as prime minister.
