The Boston Red Sox made some big trades in the offseason, and a few of them involved National League Central teams.
The Red Sox acquired Johan Oviedo from the Pittsburgh Pirates, Sonny Gray and Willson Contreras from the St. Louis Cardinals in separate trades and Caleb Durbin from the Milwaukee Brewers. Some of the players they gave up have gotten off to a solid start with their new teams, but one pitcher they sent to the Cardinals, Richard Fitts, just underwent season-ending shoulder surgery.
“Long term prognosis should be good,” Cardinals president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom said Friday, per The Associated Press. “We’re confident he’s going to bounce back and be just fine but, he’s not going to pitch again this season.”
Fitts had a 5.00 ERA in 11 games for the Red Sox last season, including 10 starts. He was the team's No. 14 prospect last year. He made his debut in 2024, pitching to a 1.74 ERA in four starts. This season, he was off to a solid start with the Cardinals in Triple-A.
He had a 1.76 ERA in three starts with Triple-A Memphis and 11 strikeouts. He had issued six walks, but overall, he was looking solid. Now, he will have to wait until next season to pitch again and hopefully return to the big leagues.
He dealt with injuries last season with the Red Sox as well. Right now, it seems like the biggest key for him to succeed will be to stay healthy so he can actually work his way back to the big leagues.
