Drivers headed in and out of Toronto in the next few weeks may want to consider alternate plans.
City officials said the Gardiner Expressway and the Don Valley Parkway will be closed on two separate weekends for maintenance work, which will only put pressure on already nightmarish alternate routes.
First up is this weekend, beginning on Friday at 11 p.m. until Monday at 5 a.m., when the Gardiner will be fully closed from the Humber River to Spadina Ave.
The second closure affects the DVP, which will be fully shut down from Highway 401 to the Jarvis St. Ramp on the Gardiner.
Maintenance is scheduled to start at 11 p.m. on Friday, May 8 and will reopen at 5 a.m. on Monday, May 11.
The closures couldn’t come at a worse time for sports fans, as the Blue Jays are in town both weekends, the Raptors host the Cavaliers for Game 3 of the first round of the NBA Playoffs on Sunday afternoon, Toronto FC plays Atlanta United on Saturday afternoon and the Marlies have a possible playoff game on Sunday.
The Gardiner and DVP closures are weather‑dependent and will be rescheduled if needed, the City of Toronto noted.
Why now?
“This planned work supports the City’s long-term strategy to maintain expressway infrastructure, reduce future disruptions, and prepare Toronto for major events, including the FIFA World Cup 2026,” officials said in a news release.
The closures amount to more than 30 overnight road closures, the city said, so allowing crews to work more efficiently while ensuring their safety saves drivers “up to 150 hours of disruption.”
Some of the maintenance work will include repairs to cracks and potholes, maintenance and replacement of guard rails, bridge inspection and removal of loose concrete, repainting of lane markings, lighting inspections and repairs, clearing catch basins to prevent flooding, and removal of debris, weeds, litter and graffiti.
Crews will also work on completing the paving of the eastbound lanes of the Gardiner between Dufferin St. and Strachan Ave., as part of the City’s long‑term Gardiner Expressway Strategic Rehabilitation Plan, as well as paving the Jameson Avenue off‑ramp.
The closure to the DVP will allow crews to resurface sections of the parkway, continue work on the Eastern Avenue bridge project and the Bayview-Bloor ramp, and provide Metrolinx access to work on part of the Ontario Line project and Toronto Hydro to complete electrical maintenance work.
