Zach Tom has offseason surgery

Gutekunst confirmed that starting right tackle Zach Tom had surgery. Tom suffered a partially torn patellar tendon during the team’s Week 14 game against the Denver Broncos that forced him to miss the rest of the season.

Tom indicated to reporters after the season that he likely would have surgery. With a recovery time of six months, the Packers hope to have him ready to go at the start of training camp.

“Fortunately for him, he’ll be ready to roll as we get going,” Gutekunst said.

Gutekunst open to drafting a quarterback

The Packers lost dynamic backup quarterback Malik Willis to the Miami Dolphins in free agency, and Gutekunst said he’s “looking to add” to the quarterback room.

The Packers currently have Desmond Ridder and Kyle McCord as backups to Jordan Love, but have evaluated the prospects and will explore adding more.

“There’s some good players in this draft,” Gutekunst said. “And if we have an opportunity to add to that room, we will.”

Packers plan to beef up cornerback room

Gutekunst said he feels good about most of the starters and the depth of the team.

While the Packers will need to add depth at nose tackle and on the offensive line, cornerback will be high on the priority list.

The Packers released Nate Hobbs after one season and signed Benjamin St-Juste this offseason. It will be crucial for the team to have more bodies to join Carrington Valentine and Keisean Nixon.

“I’m interested to see with our new coaching staff, how they adapt to what we ask them to do, but we do need to add some numbers there,” Gutekunst said. “From a numbers perspective, as we sit here today, we need to add the most numbers, so we’ll see how it goes.”
