The man, in his 70s, was travelling with his family on the Carnival Splendor when he “apparently climbed over the safety railing and jumped,” near Moreland Island on Friday night, the Brisbane Times reported.

“A review of the CCTV footage confirmed the guest’s action,” a spokesman for the cruise line said.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) was notified of a passenger who was missing at sea about 30 km northeast of Moreland Island, off the coast of Brisbane, at about 10:30 p.m., sparking an “intensive air and sea search involving multiple assets,” it said in a statement.

Following a day of searching, the AMSA said Saturday evening they had suspended their operations.

“The missing person was not located and AMSA has now released all assets from tasking,” a spokesperson said, adding the operation included jets, five rescue helicopters and six surface vessels, with Queensland Police assisting.

The search-and-rescue operation resumed on Sunday, the Queensland Police Service said, per the Times .

Second tragedy of the day

The man’s disappearance comes after the death of another passenger from the ship earlier Friday.

A 67-year-old woman from Tasmania had been snorkelling when she was found unresponsive in the water.

Despite attempts to revive her on the beach, she could not be saved.

“Investigations are ongoing into the circumstances surrounding her death,” police said.

The two incidents are believed to be unrelated.

A Carnival Cruise spokesperson confirmed the man was travelling with family who alerted the ship’s crew about a missing person.

“All appropriate authorities have been alerted and Carnival will assist authorities in their investigation upon the ship’s return to Sydney,” the spokesperson said.

“Carnival’s Care Team is supporting the guest’s family and our thoughts and prayers are with them and their loved one.”
