Xander Schauffele is already looking at ways to improve his two-under-par 70 on day one at The Masters.

The 32-year-old made five birdies and just three bogeys in an impressive first round at Augusta National.

He is comfortably inside the top 10 on the leaderboard, three shots behind Rory McIlroy and Sam Burns.

Despite his solid start, Schauffele has already thought about how he is going to card a lower score on day two.

Schauffele had mixed feelings on his first round, as he played well but made a few mistakes along the way.

“Yeah, a little bit of a mixed bag,” he said. “Nice to finish with a birdie on 17 and to get away with a par on 18. Overall, decent start.”

Looking ahead to the second round at Augusta National, Schauffele intends to play more cautiously and take fewer risks.

“Potentially attack it less, to be honest,” he explained his plan. “Less attacking and a little more conservative.

“There are some nice scores up there early from what I can see right here. You’ve got to be driving it really far to have a shorter club in, or you’ve got to be hitting your spots.

“I think I can see a period with two eagles up there, so clearly some magic to get to a 5-under number.”

This suggests the two-time major champion tried to force the issue on day one rather than playing the percentage shots.

Xander Schauffele comments on the conditions at Augusta National

There has been plenty of discussion about the conditions at Augusta National this week, given the recent lack of rain.

Schauffele admitted that the greens are already fast, but not overly different compared to when McIlroy won last year.

“The course is lush,” he added. “They’re doing what they want with the greens. That’s the beauty about this place.

“I do feel when Rory won last year, I feel like they were pretty slick as well.

“Then dating two, three years back, maybe it’s gone in the direction where it’s got a little bit more of the brown in them, that sort of slickness.

“Just got to adjust. I think adjusting is going to be the big thing. Positioning yourself is really important, too.”
