The court postponed the case to 30 July 2026. As part of his bail conditions, he handed over his passport.

Alleged manipulation of police finances

Investigators say van Rensburg used his position in the Protection and Security Services (PSS) finance division to access the SAPS Polfin system and approve fraudulent payments.

He allegedly processed large cash withdrawals disguised as travel expenses for officers in the Presidential Protection Services (PPS).

However, investigators found that the officers never received the funds.

Instead, authorities believe van Rensburg withdrew the money himself in lump-sum cash payments for personal use.

Internal probe uncovers fraud and irregular transactions

An internal investigation, launched on 1 April 2026, flagged suspicious transactions and triggered a deeper probe.

Police at Sunnyside police station then opened a formal fraud case. The SAPS anti-corruption unit took over the investigation and arrested the captain.

The department also moved swiftly to suspend him.

National police commissioner Fannie Masemola praised the SAPS financial management division for detecting the irregularities and acting on them.

Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said the service remains committed to protecting public funds and will not tolerate corruption within its ranks.

She confirmed that the anti-corruption unit will continue with a full investigation.

Police stressed that the alleged fraud does not involve close protection officers assigned to Cyril Ramaphosa, Paul Mashatile, ministers or deputy ministers.

Authorities said no members of the Presidential Protection Services have been implicated in the scheme.
