ESPN analyst Greg McElroy on Clemson’s interesting QB situation
· Yahoo Sports
Clemson football’s quarterback situation coming out of spring looks different than what most expected, and that’s where the biggest storyline begins.
According to Greg McElroy, Christopher Vizzina has positioned himself to lead the group for now, but the real surprise is how quickly true freshman Tait Reynolds has climbed into the picture. Instead of Chris Denson pushing for the backup role, Reynolds has taken that spot and made things more interesting heading into fall.

“The bottom-line on Clemson, the Vizzina against Reynolds quarterback storyline is gonna be interesting,” McElroy said. “It’s probably going to be the storyline of fall camp.”
Vizzina being out front isn’t shocking. What stands out is how firm that separation appears to be — and how Reynolds has inserted himself right behind him. For a player who missed significant time late in high school, his early progress has turned heads in a short amount of time.
McElroy made it clear this isn’t about Vizzina struggling, but more about how advanced Reynolds already looks.
“I don’t think it’s necessarily an indictment of Vizzina… I think more than anything else it’s an endorsement of what Reynolds may actually be,” he said.
That rise has also created a tough situation for Denson. Once expected to be part of a tight competition, he’s now facing the possibility of either staying in a limited quarterback role or exploring a move elsewhere to get on the field.

Meanwhile, Clemson may have a separate concern building on defense. The loss of Kourtney Kelly during spring leaves the defensive line thinner than usual, which could impact the group’s ability to rotate like it has in past seasons.
Spring didn’t finalize the depth chart, but it made one thing clear. Clemson’s most important position suddenly has a new layer of intrigue heading into the fall.
