Pirates reportedly call up Konnor Griffin, baseball's No. 1 overall prospect, ahead of home opener

The Pittsburgh Pirates are going to give their home fans something to cheer about at the team’s 2026 home opener. The team will reportedly call up shortstop Konnor Griffin, widely considered the best prospect in baseball, prior to Friday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles.

The Pirates seemingly confirmed the news on X, tweeting out a video of Griffin with the phrase “Opening Debut.”

After being selected by the Pirates in the first round of the 2024 MLB Draft, Griffin immediately established himself as a prospect worth monitoring. He appeared on all major top-100 lists heading into the 2025 season, though was considered a mid-to-late prospect on all three lists.

But a transcendent 2025 season caused Griffin to shoot all the way up to the game’s No. 1 overall prospect entering the 2026 season. Griffin hit .333/.415/.527 across three levels, eventually reaching Double-A in his first professional season.

That performance led to Griffin being ranked as the game’s top prospect by Baseball America, Baseball Prospectus and MLB.com.

Griffin, 19, entered 2026 with a shot to make the Pirates out of spring training. And while he produced some impressive highlights, Griffin struggled overall, hitting just .171 in 41 at-bats. Because of that, the team assigned him to Triple-A to start the year.

Five games at Triple-A forced the Pirates to reconsider that decision. Griffin hit .438, with three doubles and five walks, to open the season. That was apparently all the evidence the Pirates needed to bring him up to the majors.

It’s an ideal time for the team to make the move. After opening the 2026 MLB season with six consecutive road games, the Pirates will host their home opener Friday. Griffin — who will presumably be in the starting lineup — should take the field to a raucous applause from Pirates fans.

The news also comes amid rumors Griffin and the Pirates are working on a long-term extension. Neither side has announced a new contract just yet.
