U.S. President Donald Trump defended his country’s attacks on Iran in a national address Wednesday, saying Operation Epic Fury is “nearing completion” and is necessary to stop the Islamic Republic’s “quest” for nuclear weapons.

“For these terrorists to have a nuclear weapon would be an intolerable threat,” Trump said during the White House address. “The most violent and thuggish regime on Earth would be free to carry out their campaigns of terror, coercion, conquest and mass murder from behind a nuclear shield.

“I will never let that happen and neither should any of our past presidents.”

Trump claims ‘decisive’ victories

Trump’s address came more than a month after the U.S. and Israel launched joint strikes on Iran that in part targeted military installations and killed its late supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other members of the Islamic regime.

Iran has responded with missile strikes on Israel and Arab allies of the U.S in the region as well as by targeting commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest oil-shipping channels.

In his address, however, Trump contended that Iran’s navy has been destroyed since the initial Feb. 28 strikes, while its air force is “in ruins,” many of the Islamic regime’s leaders are dead and their ability to launch missiles has been “dramatically curtailed.

“In these past four weeks, our armed forces have delivered swift, decisive, overwhelming victories on the battlefield,” he said, not long after Iran had reportedly launched fresh missile strikes on Israel, the West Bank and the United Arab Emirates.

The widening conflict in the Middle East – which includes Israel’s campaigns against the Iran-backed Hamas and Hezbollah militant groups in Gaza and Lebanon as well as military skirmishes between Pakistan and Afghanistan – has roiled global stock markets and caused oil prices to rise dramatically .

Trump, who asked Americans to endure some “short-term” pain at the pumps, said he expects the conflict to be over “shortly” and that his country will strike “each and every one” of Iran’s electrical generating facilities if a peace deal is not reached soon.

“Because of the actions we have taken, we are on the cusp of ending Iran’s sinister threat to America and the world,” he said.
