Joseph Duggar pushes to be treated 'fairly' in first court appearance following his arrest

· Toronto Sun

Joseph Duggar made his first court appearance in Florida on Tuesday, nearly two weeks after being arrested on child molestation charges.

At the Bay County courtroom hearing, a judge ruled that Joseph must have no contact with the alleged victim and no unsupervised contact with minors, per Page Six . His lawyer pushed for fairness, telling the court Joseph “is asking to be treated as fairly as anyone else, regardless of his status in the television industry.”

The defence also argued for a reasonable bond, pointing out that Joseph has no prior criminal record.

State Attorney’s Office takes tougher stance

Prosecutors, however, emphasized the severity of the allegations, calling them “a serious charge against the child.” While acknowledging Joseph’s clean record, they noted he has no strong ties to the local community, as he was only in Florida on vacation at the time. Because of that, they pushed for a higher bond.

The judge ultimately set Joseph’s bond at $600,000, and he entered a written plea of not guilty , Us Weekly reported.

Joseph’s parents break their silence

Jim Bob Duggar and Michelle Duggar released a statement through a spokesperson. Joseph’s father and mother said they are “heartbroken” and currently focused on supporting their family, including Joseph’s wife Kendra Duggar and their children. They also said they are praying for the alleged victim and asked for privacy while thanking supporters for their prayers, according to Us Weekly .

The case stems from allegations first confirmed on March 18, when Joseph, 31, was arrested by police in Tontitown, Ark. As previously reported in the Toronto Sun , authorities say a now 14-year-old girl accused him of molesting her multiple times during a 2020 family vacation in Panama City Beach, Fla., when she was nine.

Pattern of abuse

According to Florida investigators , the victim participated in a forensic interview where she describe what police called a pattern of abuse. Officers said Joseph allegedly asked her to sit on his lap repeatedly, then escalated the behaviour by sitting close to her under a blanket and making inappropriate physical contact. Police allege he manipulated her underwear, grazed her genitals, and touched her thighs.

Investigators also say Joseph later apologized, after which the incidents reportedly stopped. The situation resurfaced years later when the victim’s dad confronted Joseph on March 17. According to police, Joseph admitted to his actions both to the father and to detectives.

Legal troubles

Joseph now faces multiple charges, including lewd and lascivious molestation of a child under 12 and lewd and lascivious conduct by an adult, according to the Bay County Sheriff’s Office .

On top of that, he and his wife Kendra are dealing with separate misdemeanor charges in Arkansas, including child endangerment and false imprisonment, per People . Kendra was briefly jailed, but released within hours.

This latest case adds to the Duggar family’s long history of legal troubles. Joseph’s older brother, Josh Duggar, was sentenced in 2022 to more than 12 years in prison for possessing child pornography, People reported. He had also previously been accused of sexually abusing multiple girls, including his sisters.

‘False accusations’

In a separate Toronto Sun story, Josh claims that “false accusations” were made against his younger brother Joseph. Josh, who spoke through his lawyer, stated he knows what his brother is going through.

“Josh understands the stigma of being accused,” the lawyer told the Daily Mail . “He lives with the painful reality of how false accusations can destroy a life. He understands how the targeting of a person for publicity can twist the truth into sensationalized fiction.”Legal
