Kellen Moore shares update on Chris Olave contract extension talks

· Yahoo Sports

Chris Olave is a big part of the New Orleans Saints' plans this year, and if Kellen Moore gets his way, the team's leading wide receiver will continue to take point for years to come. Moore addressed ongoing contract negotiations on an extension with the 25-year old pro, who set career highs in receptions (100), receiving yards (1,163), and touchdown catches (9) last season. He also started all 16 games for the first time in his four-year career, only being held out in the season finale out of an abundance of caution once a blood clot was detected in his lung. Now he's healthy and set to cash in.

"Yeah, there's conversations and that's what this time of year is all about," Moore said during his Monday morning media availability at NFL owners meetings in Phoenix. He acknowledged that everyone knew these contract talks were coming. The team was prepared for it, and Olave's camp was expecting it. He continued: "And so, it's just about, you know, a working relationship for everyone just to find what works best for everyone and find a good situation. So obviously we know we love Chris and we're excited about his future."

Olave really took off once Tyler Shough replaced Spencer Rattler at quarterback, recording all three of his 100-yard games once the Saints made the switch. At the end of the year Olave was recognized as a second-team All-Pro and Shough won all sorts of accolades, though he was snubbed for Offensive Rookie of the Year. That's a duo Moore wants to keep together.

So what's the holdup? It sounds like one side may be in more of a hurry to cut a deal than the other, or that the proposed structure of a big-money contract isn't lining up with everyone's expectations: "I think it's hard to, you know, try and say everyone has to follow the same timelines. There's a lot of conversations, a lot of variables that go into those things. We love Chris. It's been a really good conversation, I know, from a business side and they'll just continue to keep working through that."

Expect this deal to raise some eyebrows when it does become time to put pen to paper. Wide receiver salaries are skyrocketing along with the NFL salary cap and players with similar resumes to Olave are making $30 million or more each season. But there's a lot more to a contract than that average annual payout, and ironing out those details is going to take time.
