United Airlines introducing 'Relax Row' seats that convert into a bed

United Airlines has unveiled a new flexible seating option for economy customers that converts a set of seats into a couch or a bed for long-haul flights.

The Chicago-based airline announced the new seating configuration on Tuesday — the first of its kind in North America — allowing customers to convert a row of three seats into “mattress-like space after takeoff.”

United said the “Relax Row” option will be available in 2027 on Boeing 787 jets and Boeing 777 wide-body aircraft by 2030. It said more than 200 of them will have the new seating option with each plane outfitted with up to 12 Relax Row sections.

The company is billing the new seats as an ideal option for families travelling with small children, solo travellers and couples.

“This new, dedicated row of three seats is outfitted with individually adjustable leg rests that fold up at a 90-degree angle to create more room to sleep, stretch out or watch a movie,” the airline said in a press release .

United said additional amenities for the new seats include “a custom-fitted mattress pad, a specially sized plush blanket, two additional pillows, as well as a plush toy and Children’s Travel Kit for families.”

“As a leading premium airline, we’re committed to delivering new, industry-leading experiences for all of our customers – and the United Relax Row is the perfect example of that,” United Airlines’ vice president and chief commercial officer Andrew Nocella said in the press release.

“United is the only North American airline offering a product like the United Relax Row and is one of the many reasons why we’re continuing to win brand loyal customers,” he said.
