Former Lions All-Pro DB announces NFL retirement

Former Detroit Lions cornerback Darius Slay announced his retirement from the NFL on Monday after 13 seasons.

A three-time Pro Bowler and first-team All-Pro with the Lions in 2017, Big Play Slay departs the game after a decorated NFL career. Slay ends his career with 655 tackles, 163 passes defended, 28 interceptions, six fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles and one sack in 187 career regular-season games with 176 regular-season starts.

"Dear football, I wanna thank you for all you've done for me. I've been blessed to play the game I loved since I was 5yrs old for an amazing 13yrs at the highest level. Football was my peace, my joy, my everything.
"This game put me in a position to take care of my family and loved ones and I'm forever grateful. It's hard to say goodbye, but God has a new chapter for me and I'm ready to turn the page and start my new journey," Slay wrote in his social media post.
Slay would play in and start an additional 11 NFL postseason games, totaling 40 tackles, eight passes defended and one interception in NFL playoff games. The 6-foot, 192-pound corner won Super Bowl LIX with the Eagles to cap the 2024 NFL season.
Originally drafted by Detroit in the second round of the 2013 NFL draft out of Mississippi State, the Lions dealt Slay to the Eagles in exchange for third- and fifth-round selections in the 2020 NFL draft.
