11 Shore Conference girls wrestlers win region championships

State champions Kylie Gudewitz of Howell and Liliana Alicea of Central Regional were among 11 Shore Conference girls wrestlers who won championships Sunday in the NJSIAA's Region 3 and 4 tournaments.

Gudewitz, who was the 2024 NJSIAA 114-pound finisher, the state runner-up at 114 last season and a three-time state top four finisher, defeated Jackson Township's returning state fifth-place finisher Marlowe Donato by technical fall in the Region 31 114-pound final held at Churchill Junior High School, East Brunswick.

Alicea, the 2024 NJSIAA 185-pound champion who was third in the state at 165 last season, defeated Clayton's Alexus Paden 3-2 in the Region 4 165-pound final at Absegami High School. Alicea had a takedown in the first period.

Also among the Shore's region champions was Central senior Jade Hahn at 185 in the South Region. Hahn, who pinned in all three of her bouts in the tournament, is a two-time state runner-up. She was second at 185 in 2023, when she was at Donovan Catholic and was second at the same weight last year at Central.

The top four at each of the 12 weight classes in the four regions - Regions 1-4 - qualified for the NJSIAA Individual Championships, which will take place Thursday-Saturday at Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City.

Twenty eight Shore Conference wrestlers out of Regions 3 and 4 qualified for the state tournament. Twenty of them came out of Region 3.

Eight of the Shore's region champions came from Region 3.

Jackson Township and Central had big days

Jackson Township, which won the championship of the first NJSIAA Girls Team Tournament, finished with six qualifiers champions out of Region 3. The Jaguars also had two runner-up and a third-place finisher.

The Jaguars champions were returning state third-place finisher and two-time state top four finisher Ava Bonilla (100), returning state runner-up and two-time state top five finisher Madison Rucci (107) and returning state fourth-place finisher Brian Dugo (126).

Central had four qualifiers out of Region 4. Sophomore heavyweight Samantha Sottilare came from the No. 8 seed to finish as a runner-up and sophomore JayAnna Hahn was third at 132.

Middletown North freshman Brielle Causevic (165, who avenged two earlier defeats to Point Borough's returning state eighth-place finisher Eliza Toth.

Manasquan freshman Chelsea Garay-Jimenez (185), who came from the No. 4 seed.

Howell's returning state fourth-place finisher Giovonna Farrell-Byers (heavyweight).

The Shore's other region champion in Region 4 was Southern sophomore and Shore Conference Tournament 126-pound champion Shae-Lyn Guido (126).
