Sirens sounded across much of Israel shortly before 1 a.m. local time, sending civilians scrambling for shelters as they endured another round of retaliatory missile strikes from the last vestiges of Iran’s despotic regime —  brought to its knees by joint military operations by Israel and the United States .

Ned Steinman, who made aliyah and moved to Israel from Canada eight years ago, said it’s easy to think that living in Jerusalem — a holy city to Muslims, as much as it is to Jews and Christians — would bring some form of protection, but said Iran’s history of firing missiles indiscriminately at the city says all that needs to be said about the ideological motivations of the Iranian regime.

“That’s very clearly not the case,” Steinman said of that implied protection, speaking to the Toronto Sun on Monday.

“It’s not terrifying because we feel a sense protection within society — from the protection of the military to all of these warnings we get on our phones … we get our notifications in Hebrew, Arabic, English and Russian, so it’s not limited to one group of people.”

Israelis know regime change important

Monday’s night barrage came hours after Israel undertook additional air strikes in Iran, targeting military and government communication sites.

According to the Israel Defence Forces, Monday evening saw seven missiles from Iran launched toward northern Israel, where no injuries were reported.

Steinman, who is originally from Montreal, told the Toronto Sun that Israelis know how important dethroning the Iranian regime is and what they’re enduring is for the greater good.

“Obviously, there’s a need for this to happen, because (Iran) is the head of the snake, the head of the axis of evil,” he said.

“There was this collective understanding of, ‘This has to happen and we’ll withstand it, as difficult as it is.'”

Indiscriminate strikes reveal Iran’s ‘true nature?’

But with Iranian missiles being targeted across Israel indiscriminately, no one place in the country is safer than any other.

“With the amount of things that are being thrown at us in this random fashion, it’s not a military operation when you’re killing families, it’s not a military operation when you’re just lobbing whatever you have at us in any random way.”

Iranian missiles, he said, are falling on Palestinian villages within Jerusalem and other neighbourhoods.

“It just proves their genocidal intent to just eradicate everybody here, irrespective of what your religion is,” he said.

“You really are seeing the true nature of what this regime is all about .”
